Polynucleotides explained

What salmon DNA skin treatments are, what they can and cannot do, and how to choose.

Polynucleotides, often called PN or “salmon DNA” treatments, have become one of the most asked-about skin treatments in Sydney. This guide by Dr. Amy Chahal at The Centre for Medical Aesthetics (TCMA) explains them clearly, so you can decide whether they belong in your plan.

What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are chains of nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA. In skin treatments they are purified from salmon DNA and made into a sterile injectable gel. The polynucleotide treatments used at TCMA are from the Rejuran range: Rejuran, Rejuran i and Rejuran S.

The gel is injected into the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, through many small injections. It is a skin-quality treatment, not a filler.

How are they thought to work?

Polynucleotides are hydrating, and they are thought to create more favourable conditions for skin cells to repair and renew. The aim is gradual improvement in the skin itself: how fine lines, texture and elasticity look and feel.

Research is growing but still limited. Studies use specific products and protocols, and results vary between people. A randomised trial of polynucleotide treatment around the eyes is one example of the published evidence.

Polynucleotides compared with other treatments

Hyaluronic acid skin boosters

Mainly hydrate the skin. Polynucleotides also hydrate, and are used with the aim of supporting skin repair and quality over a course.

Filler

Adds volume and changes shape. Polynucleotides do not add meaningful volume or change facial shape.

Facial volume loss ↗

Energy and needling treatments

Pico laser, microneedling and Morpheus8 work on the skin in other ways, and can be planned alongside polynucleotides.

Collagen stimulation ↗

Who might consider polynucleotides?

People often consider polynucleotides for thin or crepey skin, early fine lines, dull or rough texture, tired-looking skin under the eyes, and lips that look dry or lined. They may be less suitable, or need to wait, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active skin infection, with a fish allergy, or with some medical conditions.

Common effects include small raised bumps, redness, swelling and bruising for a few days. Less common risks include infection, allergic or inflammatory reactions and lumps, and any injection carries a risk of injury to blood vessels. A doctor-led assessment covers the risks that apply to you.

Polynucleotide questions

Are polynucleotides really made from salmon?

Yes. The polynucleotides used in these treatments are purified from salmon DNA and processed into a sterile gel.

How long do polynucleotide results take?

Changes build gradually over a course of sessions. Your doctor should review your progress before suggesting maintenance.

Are polynucleotides the same as Rejuran?

Rejuran is a brand of polynucleotide treatment. At TCMA, Dr. Amy uses Rejuran, Rejuran i and Rejuran S, matched to the area being treated. The TCMA Rejuran protocol.

Can polynucleotides be used under the eyes?

For suitable people, yes. The cause of tired under-eyes needs to be assessed first. Rejuran for the under-eye area.

How much do polynucleotides cost in Sydney?

Cost depends on the product, the number of areas and the number of sessions. At TCMA, treatment costs are quoted after a consultation with Dr. Amy.
