For lips that look dry, textured or lined, without changing their shape.

At a glance

  • What it is: Rejuran, an injectable polynucleotide gel, with the product chosen for each patient, placed in small amounts in the lips and the perioral area around the mouth.
  • Aim: lips and surrounding skin that look more hydrated and smoother, with fewer fine lip lines.
  • Not a filler: it is not designed to add volume or change the shape of your lips.
  • Performed by: Dr. Amy Chahal, Rejuran Key Opinion Leader, at 240 Riley Street, Surry Hills.
  • Usual plan: a short course of sessions a few weeks apart, then a review.
  • Recovery: swelling, small bumps and possible bruising for a few days.

Why lips look dry, textured or lined

Lips have very thin skin and no oil glands, so they show dryness quickly. Over time, sun exposure, smoking, ageing and repeated movement can add fine vertical lines on and around the lips, and the lip border can look less defined.

Dry, textured lips

Lips that look dry or crinkled even with good lip care. This is where the lip hydration protocol is most often considered.

Lip lines

Fine vertical lines on the lips and the skin just above them, sometimes called smoker’s lines or barcode lines.

Shape or volume

If your main wish is a different shape or more volume, that is a different conversation, and Dr. Amy will talk you through it.

THE TCMA LIP AND PERIORAL PROTOCOL

Hydration first.
Shape left as it is.

  1. Assessment. Dr. Amy looks at your lips, the skin around your mouth and how they move, and asks about lip care, sun exposure and cold sores.
  2. Your plan. If the protocol suits you, you receive a plan with the number of sessions, spacing and cost.
  3. Treatment. Dr. Amy chooses the Rejuran product that suits you, and places it in tiny amounts in the lips and the perioral area. Numbing cream is applied for comfort.
  4. Review. Changes build gradually over the course, and you review progress together before deciding on maintenance.

The lip protocol is part of the wider TCMA Rejuran protocol, alongside the face, under-eye and texture and scar protocols. Many people combine areas in one plan.

Recovery and risks

The lips swell easily, so swelling, small raised bumps, tenderness and bruising are common for a few days, sometimes longer. Allow time before important events.

If you have had cold sores, tell us before treatment, as lip injections can trigger a flare and preventive medication may be recommended. Possible complications also include infection, allergic or inflammatory reactions (tell us about any fish allergy), persistent swelling or lumps, and a result you are not happy with. Any injection carries a risk of injury to blood vessels and tissue damage. Severe pain or skin colour changes need urgent medical assessment.

Rejuran lip questions

Is Rejuran a lip filler?

No. Rejuran is a polynucleotide skin-quality treatment. In the lips, the aim is hydration and smoother texture, not added volume or a new shape.

Will Rejuran make my lips bigger?

It is not designed to. You may notice short-term swelling after treatment, but the protocol is chosen for people who want their lips to look hydrated while keeping their natural shape.

Can Rejuran help lip lines?

Fine lines on and around the lips are one of the reasons people ask about the lip and perioral protocol. Deeper lines may need a combined plan, which Dr. Amy will explain.

I get cold sores. Can I still have it?

Often yes, with planning. Tell Dr. Amy at consultation, as preventive medication may be recommended and treatment is postponed during an active cold sore.

How many sessions will I need?

Most plans start with a short course a few weeks apart, followed by a review. Your exact plan is set out at consultation.
