GUIDE · THE CENTRE FOR MEDICAL AESTHETICS (TCMA)
What salmon DNA skin treatments are, what they can and cannot do, and how to choose.
Polynucleotides, often called PN or “salmon DNA” treatments, have become one of the most asked-about skin treatments in Sydney. This guide by Dr. Amy Chahal at The Centre for Medical Aesthetics (TCMA) explains them clearly, so you can decide whether they belong in your plan.
See the TCMA Rejuran protocol
Polynucleotides are chains of nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA. In skin treatments they are purified from salmon DNA and made into a sterile injectable gel. The polynucleotide treatments used at TCMA are from the Rejuran range: Rejuran, Rejuran i and Rejuran S.
The gel is injected into the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, through many small injections. It is a skin-quality treatment, not a filler.
Polynucleotides are hydrating, and they are thought to create more favourable conditions for skin cells to repair and renew. The aim is gradual improvement in the skin itself: how fine lines, texture and elasticity look and feel.
Research is growing but still limited. Studies use specific products and protocols, and results vary between people. A randomised trial of polynucleotide treatment around the eyes is one example of the published evidence.

Adds volume and changes shape. Polynucleotides do not add meaningful volume or change facial shape.
Facial volume loss ↗Pico laser, microneedling and Morpheus8 work on the skin in other ways, and can be planned alongside polynucleotides.
Collagen stimulation ↗People often consider polynucleotides for thin or crepey skin, early fine lines, dull or rough texture, tired-looking skin under the eyes, and lips that look dry or lined. They may be less suitable, or need to wait, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active skin infection, with a fish allergy, or with some medical conditions.
Common effects include small raised bumps, redness, swelling and bruising for a few days. Less common risks include infection, allergic or inflammatory reactions and lumps, and any injection carries a risk of injury to blood vessels. A doctor-led assessment covers the risks that apply to you.
