Dull and tired skin

Dermal therapist led · Surry Hills, Sydney

Skin that looks flat in photographs and tired in the mirror, without anything specific you can point at. It is the vaguest thing people come in with, and one of the more satisfying to fix.

What people actually mean by glow

Glow is not a substance you can buy or have applied. It is light behaving well — bouncing evenly off a surface that is smooth, hydrated and unobstructed.

When skin looks dull, one of those three has usually gone. The surface has become rough with dead cells and congestion, so light scatters. Or the skin is dehydrated, so it sits flat rather than plump. Or tone has become uneven enough that the eye reads it as tired.

This is why a single facial makes such a dramatic difference for about four days and then stops. It fixed the surface without touching whatever caused it.

The three usual culprits

  1. 01

    Surface build-up

Skin feels rough, makeup does not sit well, and there is a general lack of clarity even when nothing is breaking out.

How it responds: quickly and visibly. This is the component that gives you the day-after-a-facial effect.

  2. 02

    Dehydration

Skin feels tight, fine lines look more obvious than they should, and everything improves temporarily after moisturiser.

How it responds: well, but it needs the home routine sorted as much as anything done in clinic.

  3. 03

    Loss of skin quality

The underlying change — thinner, less resilient, less even. Usually gradual enough that nobody notices it happening.

How it responds: this is the longest job and the one that actually holds. It is collagen work, measured in months.

The first two are why a facial feels miraculous and short-lived. The third is why some people look genuinely different a year later.

What we look at

  • Skin imaging, which shows sun damage and unevenness invisible to the naked eye
  • Hydration and barrier function
  • Surface texture and congestion
  • Underlying tone, and whether pigment is contributing
  • Sleep, stress and anything else relevant that you are willing to tell us about
  • Your current routine, and whether it is doing anything at all

Vague concerns become specific ones once there is imaging on the screen. Most people find it useful simply to be told which of the three is actually driving it.

Treatments we use

Usually a combination — something for the surface now, and something for skin quality over the following months.

  • HydraFacial SyndeoCleansing, congestion and immediate hydration
  • SkinCeuticals PeelBrightening and surface renewal
  • RejuranSkin quality, hydration and resilience
  • SkinPen MicroneedlingCollagen stimulation for underlying quality
  • Pico LaserTone and sun damage where uneven pigment is a factor
  • Healite II LEDSupporting collagen and calming the skin
  • Bespoke FacialTailored on the day to what your skin needs
  • ZO Skin Health PeelDeeper resurfacing where appropriate

If you have an event coming up, say so. Some of these are ideal a week beforehand and some are a poor idea a week beforehand.

What changes, and when

  1. Day 1–7The surface

The immediate, visible improvement most people are after. Genuine, and by itself temporary.

  2. Weeks 2–6Hydration and barrier

Skin starts holding moisture better, which is when it stops looking flat by mid-afternoon.

  3. Months 2–6Skin quality

The collagen work. Slower, less dramatic week to week, and the part that actually lasts.

  4. OngoingKeeping it

Mostly home care, with in-clinic treatment at a rhythm that suits your skin and your budget.

Even skin tone and texture

A word about the facial-before-the-event plan

There is nothing wrong with booking something in the week before a wedding, and plenty of people do exactly that. We are happy to help.

It is worth knowing what you are buying, though. A well-timed treatment gives you a very good few days. It does not change your skin, and by the following month you are back where you started.

If what you want is skin that looks like that most of the time, that is a different plan and a longer one. We will lay out both and let you choose.

Common questions

What actually causes dull skin?

Usually some combination of surface build-up, dehydration and declining skin quality. Which one dominates is what the assessment sorts out.

How soon before an event should I book?

It depends on the treatment. Some are ideal five to seven days beforehand; others need a fortnight. Tell us the date and we will work backwards from it.

Will one treatment be enough?

For a short-term lift, often yes. For skin that looks better in general rather than for a week, no. We will be clear about which you are getting.

Is there downtime?

Some options have none at all, which is why they suit event preparation. Others involve a day or two of flushing. It is discussed before you book.

Can I combine this with other treatments?

Usually, and combinations often work better. Sequencing matters, and it is planned at your consultation.

Do I need to change my skincare?

Probably some of it. Dullness is very often a routine problem as much as a treatment one, and no amount of in-clinic work overrides what happens twice a day at home.
