What to expect for your first anti-wrinkle appointment
Written By Dr Amy Chahal
So, you’ve decided to see what all of the fuss is about and try anti-wrinkle treatments (brand names include Botox, Dysport and Xeomin) for the first time. This is a great step in preserving a more youthful appearance and can even be therapeutic in some instances – ie for treating bruxism (jaw clenching), migraine or hyperhydrosis (excess sweating). Of course your results will depend on the state of your skin to begin with, but your doctor should be providing a thorough consultation and explaining this to you
It is usually recommended that you avoid alcohol the day before your appointment and the day after – this will be effective for reducing any potential bruising. Yes – there is always a risk of bruising – though usually minimal and infrequent. It is also important to note that infection is a very small possibility – for this reason we ask that makeup is avoided for the rest of the day after your appointment. Exercise is also prohibited for the next 12 hours.
On the day, it’s best to come makeup free, but we can always help remove any makeup you may be wearing. The doctor will assess your facial movements, how strong you would like the effect to be, and also generally mark up the area to treat. The injections themselves are performed through very small needles and although slightly uncomfortable it is very tolerable!
Afterwards you may experience some redness that will improve in the next 20 minutes. Follow the above guidelines and also stay upright for the next couple of hours and you are good to go!
You will start to notice the effects in 2-3 days and generally the maximal effect sets in at 2 weeks. First timers may experience a slight headache – this is completely normal. The onset can also feel like a heaviness, and the loss of muscle movement may be strange at first. At The Centre for Medical Aesthetics we are always happy to guide you with any questions you may have and encourage you to ask questions and follow up.
